a year of drawing
I am a bit bashful when it comes to sharing my drawings. I haven't entered any of these into the student show and I don't know if I ever will. I struggle with confidence in anything I do so I didn't have enough confidence to enter them. I have never taken any kind of college level art class in the past and I now realize that it is not an easy skill, especially when you have time constraints. This first drawing is a drape study in colored pencil. I really don't like this meduim, for me, it is hard to work with. Sometimes I wondered if it was the grit of the paper that made it hard, I don't know, maybe I will practice more with it over the summer.
This drawing is in colored pencil as well. It was actually the first colored pencil drawing I did this year. We got to choose any picure we wanted for this drawing but it had to be in colored pencil. I used a picture from Real Simple Magazine to copy.
This picture was a light study. We set up spot lights over these plastered busts to capture light and then used the charcoal in different shades. I was really happy with this medium because it went onto the paper easier than the colored pencil. It had a smoother texture.
This is a self portrait drawing that I absoluted hated doing. We had to do this on graphite and again it felt real gritty on my paper. I started off with a grid and then filled in each box with the right lines. I do like the grid process because it helps with proportions.
This set of drawings was a final for this semester. We could draw anything we wanted as long as it went together as a set. I chose to do vintage signs. I saw a picture of this vintage bowling sign online and loved the colors. Then I abstracted it for the second drawing. This was done in Pastels, a medium I really love working with!
An animal metaphor drawing in pastel. It's supposed be me "coming out of my shell." I used to be very shy but I think I have slowly come out of my shell.
This was an abstract painting in Pastel. Like I said I love to use this medium and I like blending the colors together but I wasn't too pleased with the outcome. My sketch of it looked much better. This was the most challenging for me because I had to morph a picture 3 times until it was completely different than the first picture. I had a hard time with a few of these drawings because I had another class to keep up with and I stress with time constraints. That is something I need to work on, keeping up with everything and making sure I give myself enough time for each project. Being a (homeschooling) mom, wife, friend and student all at the same time isn't easy!
This class was fun even though I had some difficulties with using certain mediums. I had a really good professor who was very helpful in guiding us students and advancing us further in this area of study. She challenged us but also let us be free in expressing ourselves in our choice of subjects and mediums. Not only did I have a great professor but I had awesome classmates who encouraged me and inspired me. I am truly grateful for the friendships that I have made this year. I am super excited to get back to more art classes next semster!
