Living in China

We lived in China this past spring and one of the provinces we visited was Hainan. It was a tropical paradise where we learned how to surf for the vey first time. We met a pro Chinese surfer, Pablo, who was on the national surf team. He was an excellent teacher because I rode a wave on my very first attempt. Pablo was also amazed that I rode a wave on my first try because it's not an easy thing to do. Very few people get it on the first try. Surfing is now our new favorite hobby. We think we may plan all our trips around places where you can surf from now on.

Other than surfing we sat for hours on the beach watching the sun set over the ocean and met some foreigners whom we became friends with. Who knew that watching the ocean for hours can be entertaining.
The first night we were there I ran into a girl from Brussels who was looking for the hostel we were staying in and we ended up hanging out together most nights. This is a typical thing for us when we are in China, we always make friends with the foreigners. Another time we met an American couple from Hawaii who had lived in China for 15 years and after talking with them for a bit we learned that they were in to surfing and skating and invited us to their home so that my husband can skate on their half pipe. It was a pretty cool experience.

We stayed at the Marriott right on the bay in Sanya. The place was heavenly and after surfing for a bit I would go take a dip in their pool which overlooks the beautiful bay.

Even though the weather in Hainan is 100% humidity and you can't escape your own sweat, it was worth the trip. We celebrated our 14 year anniversary quite well.
