I don't get to see my parents as often as I'd like but I'm grateful for the moments I do have with each of them when coming back home. My father lost a leg a few years back and has had health problems ever since. He is too young for such conditions. But, as of right now he's doing great!
While there I got to see my younger half sisters and talk about the current issues of their lives. Although I do love hearing about the now, I also love to ask questions of the past. You could say that I am also a historian at heart! I could listen to someone talk about their family history for hours. For some reason I'm intrigued by knowing how certain people came to be who they are now. Usually we are shaped by the ones that raise us either for better or worse.
I wish I could flip through old journals or photo albums from my past to learn the life of my family and ancestors but I don't have much of the like. Since I don't, I make sure my children do by scrapbooking their lives and keeping this blog. I hope it will be something of a treasure for my kids and grandchildren in the future. Right now they have no interest in this stuff. Hopefully they remember these moments with their grandpa.
This time around I asked my dad a lot of questions about my grandparents. I love hearing the stories of my young dad dancing around the house with my grandmother. How she worked in factories most of her life and that she was a hard worker. My dad pulled out a few photos as we talked about her. Of course this was my favorite part! I wrote down as much as my dad could remember about both my grandparents.
I think my grandfather is more mysterious. I'd like to know more about his life. I know he was born in Mexico but I'd like to know more of who he was, his personality, and he was raised by (my great grandparents). My goal is to find these things out while I'm here. To get in touch with family and ask questions. I do have many memories of my own about htem but I like to hear about who they were as parents and young people.
